Today's equipment is not, unfortunately, as simple as our grandparent's furnace. There are a few things to check, but most likely it will require a trained professional to diagnose and repair. First, make sure that there is gas and electricity. Check that the breakers/fuses are on and check that the gas shutoff valve next to the furnace is open. For those with LP or fuel oil, is the tank full? You can also check to make sure the air filter is clean. Sometimes, believe it or not, a dirty filter will prohibit the furnace from running properly. Beyond that there is actually the possibility of doing more harm than good by opening doors and wiggling wires.
